Ion Specific Phenomena

in Physics, Chemistry and Biology

Garching, September 15-17 2008

Ion specific (Hofmeister) effects appear in biological, chemical, and physical interfacial phenomena. Examples of outstanding importance are the stability of Proteins and more generally colloidal particles. These ion specific effects were discovered more than 100 years ago, but their origin is still not clear. With the advance of molecular simulations, there is continuing progress in their understanding. In this conference the origins and manifestations of these effects will be discussed from a theoretical and an experimental point of view.
